As a HEART (humanities, ethics, art, rhetoric and teaching) scholar, I don’t shy away from skills usually regarded the STEM domain: digital projection, quantification of information, coding, thinking about artificial intelligence and chemical composition of inks, etc. If I had more applied knowledge of these things, my project would be richer, but any effort put in that direction is regarded by senior faculty as at best a fad and at worst a distraction. Nevertheless, I want to eventually show that such a cross-disciplinary collaboration gives birth to better scholarship.
Outside of work hours (who am I kidding? It’s always work hours somewhere) I am an avid conference organizer and speaker. I am the co-initiator of ScotMEMs, the Scottish Medieval and Early Modern research network, and the mastermind behind the Medieval Materialities conference series, as well as one of the organizers of the 9th (and maybe 10th as well) edition of the Gender and Transgression conference. I also create links and networks via my twitter profile (@MxComan) and on the basis of my extensive research images collection on Pinterest. All of this in preparation for a career outside of (or alternative to) academia, since writing comes to me as a pain rather than a joy. If anybody has a podcast/video/animation gig involving medieval history, hook me up *wink*!
In the end, I think, it all comes down to my politics. A religiously-raised Eastern European-expatriate invisibly-disabled atheist transman, I try to infiltrate and convert, use outsider knowledge to change things from the inside. This explains probably my concern with hypervisibility, with the body, with materiality, things that have historically been shunned from ‘proper’ scholarship. During my curation week, therefore, there will be a lot of discussion about scholar’s authenticity to self; personal politics; material practices; thinking through the body. I am looking forward to confuse, dazzle and shock you. It’s the only way I know how to write.
